CONE 6 CERAMICS

Projects range from research to design to pure artistic expression. Though varied in application , all projects are approached via material knowledge leading to the appropriate implementation of clay matter.

I am currently engaged by the Roman Kiln Society (Fired Up For London) and The City Of London to research micaceous terracotta clay in Highgate woods and to reproduce replica Roman pots from the clay. As well as working with the local clay I will also be making Roman bricks and fire bars, experimenting with standard terracotta to create these parts for the construction of a replica Roman kiln – the second part of the project, which I will be heading next summer. The clay research in this project will focus on the thermal dynamics qualities of terracotta particularly in reference to flameware in 1st century Roman pots and it’s applications in modern cookware. I have been collaborating with the artist Gabriela Schutz for a number of years, including an exhibition at ART1 Gallery in 2018. Our latest joined work was based on a selection of terracotta pots I created that were exhibited at her MA Fine Art show @CSM in July . I am currently short-listed for a NHS commission for a 9m long wall piece for UCLH Breast Clinic and MRI Unit Services at the new Bedford Passage Development. I have also been commissioned to create terracotta tableware for Coal Yard Restaurant in Kings Cross (an Israeli restaurant which is part of the Tom Dixon group). Making tactile, huggable bowls for my ‘HUG’ series was inspired by chicken soup – the culinary link to my heritage. It was the first time that I directly embedded emotional context to a functional form. The clay is of course terracotta to link back to the Israeli landscape creating a connection between the food and the tableware.
