Clayground Collective
Clayground Collective is an award winning independent company of creative practitioners working primarily with clay who collaborate across artforms to engage the public, educators and researchers. They work in a variety of locations and spaces, responding to the specific qualities of each one, Working collectively with others including: artists, ceramicists, poets, boatmen, librarians, graphic designers, photographers, film-makers, academics, musicians and archaeologists. They seek advice from specialists in different fields to increase their own knowledge and forge different institutional partnerships to make things happen. Co-Directors Duncan Hooson, artist and educator specialising in clay; Claire West, arts and crafts professional; and Julia Rowntree, writer and researcher, run Clayground and curate projects.
I have been working with CLAYGROUND COLLECTIVE since last year on a range of community focused clay projects. It is very rewarding to use my clay skills in combination with my teaching experience to introduce the joys of clay to an audience which has very little or no contact with clay and for the most with any artistic expression. Responses are always hesitation that melts into great delight. Clay is the most tactile of all the arts and therefore allows for feeling your way through making without the necessity of planning or forethought. It can be instinctive and as such, a very free form of expression, open to all.
