CONE 6 CERAMICS

I am currently studying BA Hons in Ceramic Design at Central Saint Martins. I have been teaching for many years, and social engagement and activism form an important part of my practice. I started off as a potter, and though also I work in hand building, the wheel is still my preferred working method; I like both the speed and energy as well as the precise results, but I am in a constant search of how to use it as tool rather than being bound by it. I work in Stoneware and porcelain, but the clay I tend to work with most of the time is terracotta. The affinity I have with it begins as a reference to my childhood landscape but as I researched and experimented with it, I found it’s qualities to be exceptional. I have used it both in function-ware and in 'dysfunctional' making. My work stems from the materiality - it is both the tool and the final expression.
My work deals with belonging / not belonging spanning the personal and the political expressing resistance via disruption. I have been working in clay for over 7 years, and beforehand I was working in theatre and film making, scriptwriting, food and design. I have come to realize that regardless of medium, research is key and storytelling is still the most important part of my making. Orly Kritzman Kadron
